I have a rotation of four classes that I primarily teach - CIS 260, APR 270, APR 422/522 and APR 423. I also teach Advertising Campaigns, but usually just the section involving the National Student Advertising Competition team, which is open only through an application process. I really don't have a favorite class among the classes I teach - I enjoy all four of these classes because I find that there is something interesting and fun in all four.
APR 270This is the strategic thinking class. In this case study-driven class, we work to do the preparation necessary to make good strategic decisions. I tell students that this class should give them a good idea of whether you're going to like advertising or not, since strategy is central to virtually every job in the ad business.
This class is also the home of the Strategy Showdown. Ask around. |
CIS 260This class is the consumer research and insights class. In this class, you learn about not just the principle tools of consumer research - surveys, focus groups, interviews, etc. - but you learn how to turn your data into a story that helps inspire the creative and media teams that develop client solutions.
This class is also about learning how to do more than look at the data, but to look into the data, for answers. |
APR 422This class is the channel planning class, which is primarily about media planning. I did a lot of different work in the agency business, but I consider myself first and always a media person. There is math - every day - and a really challenging media planning project at the end of the semester. This class opens your eyes to the part of the advertising business where most of the money is spent.

APR 423This is the agency management class, and it is exactly what is says - a class where we learn about how agencies run, how they are paid, dealing with clients and employees, the importance of new business and the steps on how to pitch new business. This is also a (W) class, so we do a good bit of writing.
